Flathead Lake covers nearly 200 square miles and has more than 185 miles of shoreline. It is the largest natural freshwater lake in the western United States. Visitors can boat, swim, fish, and explore Wild Horse Island State Park, home to bighorn sheep and wild horses. Public access sites and state parks surround the lake, making it a central recreation area for northwest Montana.

Hungry Horse Reservoir extends more than 30 miles through the Flathead National Forest near Glacier National Park. The dam, completed in 1953, stands among the tallest concrete dams in the United States.
