Flathead Lake
Flathead Lake covers nearly 200 square miles and has more than 185 miles of shoreline. It is the largest natural freshwater lake in the western United States. Visitors can boat, swim, fish, and explore Wild Horse Island State Park, home to bighorn sheep and wild horses. Public access sites and state parks surround the lake, making it a central recreation area for northwest Montana.
Hungry Horse Reservoir
Hungry Horse Reservoir extends more than 30 miles through the Flathead National Forest near Glacier National Park. The reservoir and surrounding mountains provide opportunities for boating, fishing, camping, and scenic driving. The dam, completed in 1953, stands among the tallest concrete dams in the United States. Clear water, forested slopes, and mountain views make it a popular outdoor recreation area close to Kalispell.
Lake McDonald
Lake McDonald is the largest lake in Glacier National Park, stretching ten miles and reaching depths near 500 feet. The lake is surrounded by steep mountain peaks and known for its multicolored shoreline rocks. Visitors can kayak, take scenic boat tours, or view the lake from the Apgar area near the park’s west entrance. It is one of the park’s most photographed landmarks.
Glacier National Park
Glacier National Park covers over one million acres of mountains, valleys, and alpine lakes. The park includes more than 700 miles of hiking trails and the well-known Going-to-the-Sun Road. Flathead National Forest

Major recreation areas include Hungry Horse Reservoir and the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex. Whitefish Lake

Whitefish City Beach provides public access with lifeguards in summer, while Whitefish Lake State Park includes a campground and boat launch.
